The Cummins ISX EGR cooler is one of the most failure-prone components on the platform. Common failure symptoms include unexplained coolant loss, internal leaks with no visible external signs, engine overheating, and the potential for the truck to enter a 5 mph derate due to failed DPF regeneration. When it’s time to bypass or delete the EGR cooler entirely, simply removing it without addressing coolant flow creates a new problem.

A measured amount of the water pump’s flow normally passes through the EGR cooler before returning to the back of the block near the #5 and #6 liners. If the EGR cooler is removed without a proper bypass solution, the water pump experiences excessive pressure and struggles to deliver cooled coolant to the rear of the engine efficiently. This potentially causes liner damage, premature wear, and reduced engine lifespan.

This two-piece transfer tube set (OEM part numbers 4367122 and 5575183) resolves that issue entirely. These tubes ensure efficient coolant circulation between major engine components, helping maintain proper engine temperature under heavy-duty operating conditions. The rear tube also includes a built-in coolant vent that prevents air from being trapped in the system during filling and operation, continuously bleeding to the top tank for bubble-free coolant flow — a feature not found on all aftermarket alternatives.

Compatibility Notes

On most Kenworth, Peterbilt, and Western Star applications these tubes install as a direct replacement with no modifications required. A few exceptions to know:

• Water pump note (CM870, CM871, ISX15 CM2250/CM2350, QSX15 CM2250/CM2350): Engines built before July 18, 2016 (ESN 79930769) may require a new water transfer tube if the water pump has been replaced. See Cummins TSB160109 for details.
• Freightliner & International chassis: Fitment may vary due to water pump inlet pipe configuration on some chassis. Please verify that the 5575183 & 4367122 will work with your engine.
• Full EGR delete: The #1 exhaust manifold end is typically replaced with a 90° elbow (Cummins p/n 3683870) as part of the delete process. This is a separate exhaust-side step — the tubes install the same way regardless.
